I often get the same question from my clients: should they do more cardio to lose weight, or focus more on weight lifting? While it’s partly true that cardio can help you lose weight, there are some things we miss out about weight lifting.
So what does Cardio mean?
Cardio (short for Cardiovascular conditioning) is defined as any type of exercise that gets your heart rate up and makes you sweat during training. This includes walking, running, cycling, HIIT workouts, and boxing.
Weight Lifting (Strength Training) includes lifting free weights like barbells, dumbbells, and kettlebells or using weight machines to lose fat and build muscle.
Women are often scared of weight lifting, thinking that they will look bulky and less feminine. However, this is not true.
The significant difference is that weight training workouts can burn a ton of calories DURING the workout, with the added benefit of increasing calorie burn AFTER the workout as well, which cannot be said for cardio workouts.
Weight Lifting also helps sculpt lean muscle tissue, keeps your metabolism healthy, and improves stability and coordination. It is super beneficial for all women who want to get rid of extra fat.
If you are concerned with burning the maximal amount of calories to aid in weight loss, a combination of the two workout styles could benefit you the most, as both have their distinct benefits (and drawbacks).
I noticed a total difference in my physical structure and mental health improvement when I started doing both Cardio and weight lifting. Every time I’m in training, I always aim to lift heavier than last time, which leads me to accept new challenges.
However, it’s essential to challenge your body through physical activity, but without proper nutritional support, your progress will stall. High protein foods are essential for gaining muscle, and I always recommend that you eat as much protein as you can when you are lifting weights.
So, I want my Warriors to notice that if your desired body goal is to look fit, burn fat, and tone your body, you can’t ignore weight lifting.
